Fishing Boca Grande

Boca Grande, Fl
Oct, 19, 2000

In the year 1800, October 18th was Saturday, the day of Loki, Norse god of revelry. Many celebrated the Great Horn Faire to honor the god of forests, Hu Gadern to the Druids and Athos to the Welsh. There was a new moon and the nights were pitch black. I'll bet the fishing at first light was terrific. Two hundred years later, on a waning moon, the fishing was still great. Everywhere I went we caught something; seatrout, redfish, snook, jacks or ladyfish. It didn't matter if you used a fly, artificial lure or live bait, you still caught something. That's the kind of fishing I love.

Our best catches were snook and seatrout, with the numbers just about equal. The snook were small measuring up to 25 inches or so. We would occasionally find one in the slot between 26" and 34". The seatrout were averaging around 13 to 14 inches but each day this week we managed a limit of keeper-sized fish. All the fish came from areas in or around Bull Bay. The best way to find the fish is to watch for moving water in an area close to some kind of cover. i.e. a deep hole, a good overhang or a dark bottom of grass. The moving water is important.

Scott Green and his partner Cary brought a group to Boca Grande to Fish with Capt. Brandon Naeve, myself and several other guides. Everyone in the group caught some snook, redfish and trout. A dozen people managed a small slam each day. That's pretty good fishing.

Scott and Mary Dickson spent a day with me this week, taking home a limit of seatrout and some nice reds. It was the first snook for Mary, a Florida native and now avid angler. Wendal and Mary Hough, my good friends from Sarasota, took lots of snook, a great catch of trout and a couple of reds on Wednesday. Mary is happy, her freezer is full again.

November is forecasted to be warm and dry on the southwest Florida coast and the fishing will remain good throughout the month. With the light winds it will be ideal for fly fishing. When you fly-fish this time of the year, you'll never know what you might catch because all the species are around and looking to eat.

Good Luck and Tight Lines,
Capt. Pete
