RE: Looking For Englewood Spots
Hi Ray: I moved to this area last March. There are some great spots near Englewood to fish for snook, redfish, and tarpon. Ihope you realize that May begins Tarpon mania season here and most guides will be booked solid. Boca Grande can be fished from shore in May for snook, trout, reds, crevalle jacks, ladyfish, snapper, and of course tarpon (however these are better pursued by boat). I tend to avoid crowds and Boca gets pretty crowded once tarpon show up. We tend to fish the minor tributaries of the Myakka river system by canoe/kayak and wading. Good fishing is available in these shallow river systems in May as the water has not gotten too hot by then. Last May we took reds, trout, snook, jacks, ladyfish, snapper, baby bull sharks and small tarpon in the Myakka during May via canoe. Typically, we were the only one's fishing these areas as they take a little more work and stamina to access. Many days we would take 20+ reds on fly in addition to a smattering of the other fish I mentioned depending on the weather and tides. The reds however always sem to be present and cooperative. I used to guide out of the Saltwater Edge Flyfishing shop in Newport RI (Capt. Bob DeKeulenaere) but don't guide down here yet. While your down here don't pass up frsh water fishing it's absolutely fantastic for largemouth bass in the many freshwater canals and ponds. Just dump in a canoe and have fun. Good Luck and enjoy your trip.
