St. Croix

I am interested in anyone's comments on fishing on this island. I will be traveliing there during the first week of may and I wondered if I should bring my flyrod with me. Thanks in advance...

Ben

RE: St. Croix

Hi Ben,
A few years ago I was on St. Croix for a wedding and I got a chance to go flats fishing with a guy that guided as a side job. I will see if I can find my notes on all the various names of him and the places we fished but in the mean time here are some thoughts: We went fishing for Permit. We used Black flies that were tied to look like small golf ball sized Black Sea Urchins. The flies were weighted and had weed guards.( The local Permit eat them up so I'm told - I never saw one but I'm very confident that the area would be quite productive. I did see small Urchins so the fly seems correct.) There were two areas that the guide said were good on the South West side of St. Croix: One was where he took me which was 30 yards inshore from the edge of the flat. We used a boat to get there because there was deeper water between the land and the flat but as I remember the Northern part of the flat was accessable from the shore. In any case the second place to go is at the Northern part of the flat. There is a cresent shaped formation along shore that the Permit go to during certain tides but I can't remember exactly when, though rising tides seem to work best for Permit elsewhere. There is a Southern main road that cuts across the island from east to west and intersects with a shore road on the west coast. If you walk directly from that intersection toward the water you find yourself within a short walk of the second fishing location (Cresent) In total it is probably a 15 minute walk from that intersection to the end of the cresent.
If I can find my notes - I'll let you know.
Ned
P.S. Have you ever heard of anyone Fly Fishing in Eqypt?
