RE: Sanibel & Captiva
Just got back from Sanibel (3/2) and the fishing was slow or at least with the guides I went with it was slow. Not really their fault because you could see the fish, but they wouldn't even take live bait.
I recommend you look up a guide named Steve Bailey from Fort Myers. He is a very good guide and fishes out of the ramp on the land side of the Sanibel causeway. I think the name is Punta Rossa or something similar. It is easy to find. Steve fishes only in the morning through 1pm because he works for the post office in the afternoon and early evening. His number is (941) 489-1379. There is another good guide. His name is Steve Jones (941-278-3564), but I don't think he is quite as attuned to fly fishing as Steve Bailey. Both are nice with Jones being the more intersting personality...nice guy. Bailey is supposed to be one of the finest fly tyers in the country and a friend of Lefty Kreh. I asked Lefty at a show one time and he says he uses Bailey's flies when ever he can. Also try this site http://www.cybersanibel.com/fishing.htm. Is is the Sanibel/Captiva guide site. That should help. One last thing. It seems to be the consensus to avoid a guide who has a boat called the Barhopper. Have no first hand knowledge. However, fisherman and guides have told me stories about him and they weren't good. The guides won't give the name unless you ask them point blank and mention the name, but the all seem to agree. Lots of luck You are going at a very good time of year for Reds, Trout and Snook. Tarpon should be available as well.
