Vero Beach 2/23 Report

Had a good day on the water with Reel Time sponsor, Capt. Eric Davis (Vero BackCountry) last Wednesday. Fished within a mile in either direction of the SR60 bridge on the ICW in Vero Beach. Eric clearly knows the waters well and put us fairly consistantly into fish the entire day. We started out with top water plugs for trout and ladyfish with a few fish boated. Eric moved constantly to find fish. As I've yet to start SWFFing in earnest, my thrill for the day was picking up a number of ladyfish on Eric's fly gear. Great fun.....you fly fishing geeks may be on to something here. After lunch, we spent the afternoon skipping shad puppies into the mangroves for snook. Had ample opportunity to hook them but ended up boating only 2 or 3 losing one nice snook to a sunken tree snag. It's just great for a New Englander to be fishing in Feb. I highly recommend Eric; he's a good guide who will be as serious as you want him to be. I'll be heading to Vero most winters now and I will certainly be fishing with Eric each visit.

RE: Vero Beach 2/23 Report

Dave,

I'm glad you had a good time. Ladyfish are exciting to catch!

So, when are you buying that new fly rod?

Lately, I've been exploring some local marshes for largemouth bass. It's been tough to catch them as the marshes are full of bowfin and gar which voraciously attack my lures.

I'll be getting back to the salt this weekend.
Dave

Dave, you're lucky to be able to fish this time of year; fresh or salt. I was impressed with the Vero-Ft. Pierce area; a boaters and fishermans paradise. ICW, near shore and off shore accessible for most if not all of the year.

The fly rod is coming. I spent this winter beefing up my spinning gear and futzing with boat things. FFing isn't too far behind, Dave
