10-19 to 10-21: Canal/Outer Beach

Pretty decent weekend, although no fish of bragging size.

The best time of all was late Friday night/early Sat AM at the Canal on the high west tide between Sag and east end. Acres of fish in the rip and every drift produced a fish for about 3 hours straight. Most were high schoolie range although I managed 5 legals to 32 inches. Eels might have pulled out a few larger. Lots of birds working the east end basin at daybreak and lots of bait (looked like 5 inch herring, possibly bunker). Early Sunday AM was nearly as good although the fish were smaller and there were a lot more people around.

Tried the Outer Beach Sat night and couldn't rustle up any bigs on eels, but the schoolies were hitting needlefish with abandon. Lost a larger fish that tore one of the hooks clear off.

There were a ton of stripers in canal friday a.m. east end. Best bet are big swimmers and live eels. I thought everyone gave up on canal since there haven't been any reports lately but if your looking for the trophy fish it is now! Should hear about some 40 and 50#'s in the next two weeks.

Hit Scusset end of canal Sat night. No luck with cut bait but 2 guys slinging eels were hooking up. One got a nice 37" fish. Beautiful night, stayed till 1am but got no fish after 12 on eels these guys had gave me. A woman there also got a 28" on chunks

It was the same Thurs. night Fri. morn...tons of fish in the rips east of the Sag. Also told Thunderod of my bigest fish yet, aprox. 150lb Bluefin Tuna last week in R.I. on my 80lb standup rod. I'll be back to the Canal as soon as I can though! Bill
