Fishing in Tahiti

Hey All,

I am planning a fishing trip to Tahiti.
Anyone fish there before?

Thanks!

No Way!

I posted a thread about flyfishing in French Polinesia weeks ago.
No one replied.
Then I surfed every possible site about it and I've found just a few information.
Go to http://www.tahitilures.com/ , it's the only good stuff I've found. It's very expensive!
I will go there in july and I will try all by myself walking and fishing the flats in Rangiroa, Manihi and Bora Bora.

Bye!

Hey, thanks for the reply.

I have been to Tahiti once only, but didn't fish... well,
didn't seriously fish. I didn't bring any gear down.
So I just used what the locals use, a line and a hook with bait at the end. But I did see some sweet spots to fish.

I just wanted to see if anyone on here knew more about fishing in Tahiti so the next time I go I can catch some real fish!

Going in July? That's a good time to go... The weather should be perfect... but it will still be hot, it's Tahiti! =)

Cool, when you get back, let me know how it went.

Spent 3 weeks end Nov 98 in Society Islands. Caught by night through wire trapping technique (like Mike Geyver would have done) a huge blue eyed eel, 1.50 m long, using my finger as bait in front of rock hole hide (in mountain stream of Tahiti-iti (the big one).
Sea fly fishing is possible from PaPeete main town thru fishing tour operators (extremely expensive) but if you go to the only (fishing) village of Tahiti-Ini (the small one), you can hire the services of local fisherman on speedboats and try catching Tarpon, Dorade Coryphene (Dolphinfish).

Good place to try fly fishing is inside the central lagoon of Huahine, but when I was there, had only regular rod & line.
Basically, you'll need a boat in order to go outside the coral reef area and target the real big fish.

To me, it seemed easier to catch a Vahine (local Polynesian girl) with a 'fly' of humour that edible fish....

There are some flats on the East side of Bora Bora that are fishable on foot from shore. Small bonefish are around and catchable. I hired a boat one day and am still recovering from the cost

My luck was less possitive on Moorea as there weren't as many flats (that I could find).
