Cool Going Fishin'

Hi Guys,
I used all my "father's day charm" to get the green light on kayak fishing the Salt the next 2 Sunday mornings.
Just wondering if anyone else can join.

Here's what I was thinking...
Sun 6/23 - Newport's Brenton Reef.
Sun 6/30 - Open to suggestion

I admit to be a "spinning" guy and new to this forum.
I wish someone else was organizing something.
I missed the Monomoy trip.
Since I don't see anything on the couple forums I check, here's my try at it.
Anyone interested?
Thanks
-Greg
ps. I live in MA, so anything MA or RI is fine.

I might be able to join you at Brenton Reefs, but probably won't know until Saturday evening. I'll follow the posts and touch base with you towards the end of the week.

G-Man,

You probably haven't gotten many responses yet because all us RT'ers are in church on Sunday morning.

Do you have a SOT? Brenton Reef is big water.

Where's the meeting place going to be? Also what time are you thinking?

R'Man

I'd like to join you but things are going to be a little tough for me the next few weeks so I'll have to see. Tell us more about this Breton Reef big water...

Brenton Reef is off the southwest corner of Newport's Ocean Drive. Very fishy place. Also dangerous as heck. Full ocean front so any swells or wind makes it treacherous. The big boats don't dare go in there....and only experienced small boat guys will try it. (if they are smart).

I think it only should be attempted in a SINK under very good conditions if at all. If there is a place for a SOT, this is it.

Thanks for the responses guys.
Well said Rockfisherman.

As it turns out I have some network changes to make at work on Sunday morning, so I will be going Saturday morning after all. And in respect to the good church going folks.

As long as there is no strong southerly wind, I think Brenton is quite doable. There is a nice protected beach to put in to the left. It is such a beautiful place.

This is mostly my own "scouting", but I would enjoy some company. I'll confirm later this week as we get the weekend's weather. I have been itchin to put my Scupper Pro in that water. I'll take pics Sat for those that have never seen that spot. One of Rhode Island's gems.
Take Care

Brenton point

I'd love to meet you there. There are ways and places to fish in the reef area that are safe for just about anything. Assuming it doesn't blow hard from the south. I live in Newport. And have seen things get nasty quick. I've been out at night and in daylight and with prudence it can be a blast. It can also teach you your limits very quickly. What time? Which entry?EKG

Please be careful guys. Although I like rough water, from what rockfisherman says it might be too gnarly for most people. Although it may be doable, it might not be a good idea. Obviously it's up to the individual to decide what they are willing to take on... I just don't want to wind up reading about another fishing related death in the papers. Buddy up, leave a float plan, bring your safety gear and tell us what you find.

Tight lines and happy paddling,

Thumbs up

Big thumbs up EKG!
My luck to fish with a local..terrific!

I'm planning to be at the park around 8am.
Tan Toyota minivan - blue kayak.
Let's meet at left end of parking area as you look out to the water.

Man, I hope the weather cooperates!
Let's confirm on Friday, buddy.

Sam, thanks for the concern. This spot is not as bad as it sounds here. I have always fished the Salt with a SOT and wetsuit. I got my initial interest in kayaking from the west coast sites, where everyone wears wetsuits. Only on the east coast sites do I hear of sit-ins and waders and such. Anyway, should be fun, and I look forward to fishing with you, Ray, and other locals soon.
Thanks
G-Man

Well, looks like Sat AM in Newport is a go!
Light variable winds from south in the AM, should be nice.
Chance of showers later in day.

Ekg still a go, buddy?
Notime....have you got time?
Rock...can you join us?

Any other takers?
Rare opportunity to fish with ekg, your best Newport guide.

Beautiful day at Newport Saturday.
I do have to admit that Brenton was too rough for a sit in.
It was great fun for the SOT and wetsuit combo tho.
A couple schoolies following up to the boat was the closest I got to the fish tho... Oh well. We only gave a couple hours of fishing. I'll be trying that again this summer.

My family came, and did the cliffwalk while we kayaked. EKG showed me a really nice quiet small bay area for a family outing next time. We picniced at Ocean park, while at least 50 kites were flying. All in all..a great day. Thanks EKG.
