STRANGE, I just called the number and AL 7/8s are 195 and the 9/10s are 169. Maybe you were lucky.

Ken,
I picked up two Wide Arbor Reds at the Manchester Ctr., Vt. Tent Sale for $50 bucks apiece. Small slip in boxes said there reels willnot carry the Reddinton Warrentee.
They performed withthe usual Reddington Precision on 30" + stripers at Monomoy in June. i'm keeping mine.
When you call back ask about that batch!
Sam,
Check the box when it arrives.

Sam,
What's the AL series? I just checked Redington.com and they don't show the series.

AL = large arbor
AS = standard arbor. These 2 are older models no longer produced by redington.
Also, RS2 model is $49.
I just picked one up myself in gold. very sweet deal.

I looked up "Redington AL" with google and found a fly shop selling them for around $200.
So I called and ordered a gold 9/10 AL for $74.
Thanks, Sam.

My Orvis Newspaper came today. The reels are in the sale section. Ad says they do NOT come with the Redington guarantee.
Just wanted everyone to know what the deal is before you order.

What???
I bought an AL 9/10 from a shop in Marlboro for $100. I was told that Redington would continue to manufacture spools and service it in the future.
Call Redington, Orvis or whatever. But from what I was told they will continue making spools, sell them for $100 a pop, and service the reel if there are problems.
I don't think you'll have any problems with reel. But from what I've heard, if you do have problems, you'll be able to get parts and it serviced no problem. Redington hangs their hat on customer service.
Those reels are nasty. I've landed some nice fish on them. Just don't drop it in sand. They hold a ton of line for a large arbor. Only downside is weight.

The way I understand it is that the reels being sold at closeout prices have some kind of etched mark on the inside of the frame. They will not be covered by the lifetime warranty, while those not etched will be covered. That is not to say that the etched ones won't be serviced, just not at no charge. And Redington will supposedly stock parts to service the reels for several years.
I must admit I'm surprised to see so many positive remarks about these reels with no negatives. I, and several people I know, have had terrible luck with them. I was about to put my AS 7/8 on eBay when Redington discontinued them, but since that drove the value down, I decided to keep it as a backup.

Etched Marks???
What???
They discontinued the line so they want to get rid of the reels. No big deal.. Manufacturers do it every year. I'm sure it also has something to do with the aquisition by Orvis.
As far as reel performace goes, the reel works very well. I guarantee anyone who has any problems did one of three things to cause them.
#1.Dropped the reel in sand. (You can't do this with this reel, or you have to clean the sh&t out of it.) It has a closed drag. Sand in the case will cause it to lock up.
#2.Oiled the reel to much. (Oil on the drag washer will not allow you to set the tension high.) Once you do it, your screwed until you buy a new one.
#3.Not sprayed it down efficiently. Being Negligible here, and the reel will rust. I haven't seen any reels that don't rust when used in salt water and aren't cleaned properly.

Nope. I did none of the above to the reel. The drag froze. It happened the very first time I used it. I sent it back to Redington. They "fixed" it. I used it one more time and this time when a fish took line, the reel temporarily went into free spool. No dropping, no oiling, no salt water. This was being used for salmon in Pulaski, NY. Two other people I know had the same things happen to theirs. In fact, one of them (an AL 7/8) went into freespool just like mine on the same salmon fishing trip.
Gee, MKD, do you work in customer service for Redington? When I called them the first time they tried to tell me it was all my fault.

Yep on the etched marks...check the inside of the reel, it will have a small circle with a slash through it.
I bought a bunch of these earlier this year at a Orifice tent sale..$69 each...no spools-so what I bought more reels
The redington spinning rods I got for the boat are the same thing...circle and slash.
They'll service it but NO warranty. For that price buy extras like I did...and if one breaks then you got 3 more
