Blue flatwing

I tied this flatwing as a squid imitation, but I think it would be a good herring pattern also.

Me like. Mike if you can find big long Amherst tippets they will put the eye further down the fly. Underwater it looks very nice and doesn't get messed up.

Squid eyes

Try tying the amherst "eye" in at the tail. Use a perminant color marker in amber or chartreuse and "color" the eye. Or use a very short dyed badger saddle, same colors. Then tie a series of very sparse collars up the shank of the hook.

John, I tried tying an amherst tippet into the tail but it would get fouled up with the saddles. If it worked for you, what is your method? Have you found a magic dock yet?

Mark, Two ways, or a combination of the two. Build up a small shoulder with your tying thread. Tha gives you something to cinch sown and back against. This often is enough to flair the tippets out, or put a small kink in the shaft of the tippet and tie it in like you would a golden pheasant crest topping on a salmon fly. Sometimes you need both. Depends on the feather...

You can get the 254 for like 6.15/100 from Janns Netcraft or www.captharrys.com I quit paying $4.00 for 10-20 hooks.
