neponset river where granite ave crosses

I was on my way to work this morning and peered across the river as I do every morning. Today I saw what appeared to be 30-40 comerants gathered in the middle of the river..this must be a sign..bait must be working it's way in soon..

Mike..

A very good sign. I look for them in the Charles everymorning while riding the subway. So far I haven't seen any. Maybe the herring are in the harbor getting ready to enter the rivers?

Of course, if you saw the thread on CSOs maybe they were feeding on freshly stocked, er...flushed, "brown trout"

noticed a bunch on the North shore islands a couple weekends a go, also have been seeing a few around Winthrop recently.. no feeding witnessed, just sitting on the rocks.

Every year around this time I'll look out the window at work and see them lined up in formation chasing the bait (herring?) up the river. First I get excited then I wish for an M-16 to clear them out and save the bait for the fish. The comerants as well as the netters can do significant damage on the supply. I don't remeber seeing so many 10-15 yrs ago as there are now a days. Any body else notice the same or am I wrong?

Bassbuster: you can thank DDT for limiting the populations of many birds. In the 60's &70's many bird populations crashed because DDT made their eggs too fragile to hatch. Since then the populations have been booming. With fewer predators there does seem to be more than ever now.

Cool

I saw some birds working.....where the neponset river empties out...just before the cornor to Quincy Bat mariner....i almost pulled over to the breakdown lane. Then later on that day...i mentioned it to somone...they said most likely...the smelt...dropping back out of the river......but got my heart rate up a lil...
Whats up with this damn weather.....

Have a good one...Bob H
