Punch - I respectfully disagree with your post.
I DO think it is important to share info and stories and advice etc. and I try to do so as often as time allows.
On the other hand what is really wrong with someone trying to sell their gear on the "Tackle Forum"?
It's just one lousy post. If you don't like it, then don't read it. Did it hurt anyone? Did it offend anyone? Probably not.
Ultimately it might actually do some good for someone. One man's garbage is another man's gold (something like that). If some guy is selling his old rod and some other guy actually wants to buy it, then good for both of them! They both benefit from the transaction. Maybe we all do as well when those 2 guys go and buy new gear and come back to share their good (or bad) experienes on the water...
Ultimately it's here or E-bay. So why not here? Keep it in the family.
Maybe the Seller is kind and donates a small percentage to the board for letting him post. Not a mandatory fee but a gesture of gratitude. After all isn't that what we all strive to achieve? Selflessness, sharing knowledge, helping others, gratitude, kindness et al?

One time posters
Heck.... that's how I bought my Parker. So long as they don't turn a site into their own garage sale I'm cool with it

I'm on another forum for backcountry skiing and they have a specific header for gear. Perhaps we should have one here too? I've found some great deals through that forum.

I'd think that if I was selling something I'd like to give the first chance to one of you guys..that way you know it will go to someone that will put it to good use..
I don't see an issue with it at all?
punchshot are you having a bad day?

I agree with you Punch, however its a tough line to walk. On one hand you get people, who post once to sell something, get what they want and never come back. Yes, its annoying and would be nice if there was something in return. On the other, you might get someone to visit the site to sell something, but comes back and turns into a valuable contributor. Its hard to feel that kind of thing out. I wouldn't want to turn away a potentually valuable poster for that reason alone, especially with the "keeping it in the family" point of view. People here watch that kind of thing...

Classifieds...
Yeah, I notice that too...
One the one side, we don't really give them another option, and many of them do ask me before they do it.
On the other side, there's no reason we shouldn't be grabbin' a little taste. I've wanted to put up a paid classified system for a while, but just haven't had the time to do it. Might make a nice little project for someone with PHP coding experience.

Buy-sell-trade
There is another forum with one. For new stuff Ebay seems to be the way to sell it. I've seen stuff go for more than I could buy it for, some good deals also. I would think that if it was a separate forum and non commercial only it would eliminate the traffic and moderator time on the ones most people read. If you don't want to look at it don't. Maybe a minimum # of prior posts or it gits zapped with standard message.

I checked out the Jenny Grist Mill in Plymouth today and saw the herring battling the current so it better not be too much longer, I'm getting pretty grumpy

A car site that I am a member of allows its members to post FS adds after they have a certain amount of posts. Its not right to see a members first post is selling a rod or reel. The point of this site is a community of ideas, not an open marketplace. If you don't contribute to the site why should you be allowed to sell your goods here?
Mike
50 post minimum sounds good.

It's not tough to do that.
I could put up a classified forum and limit it to people with x amount of posts. The downside is that by doing that, you all of a sudden start getting a lot of "me too" posts as they try to pad their post count to get to the magic number.
