Trolling motor options

Hi,

I was wondering if any of you guys have experience with a motor mounted or transom mount trolling motors. I have a 185 Scout . I love the boat and can get into some skinny water but because of the bow config I cannot get a bow mount Minnkota etc. setup on my boat. My concern was control while pushing the boat. I have used transom mounts on light aluminums but never on a 2000 lb. boat.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

JT

Trolling Motor response

Everybody has probably been fishing since you posted your question. I have seen two methods for stern or transom mounted trolling motors. If you get a powerful enough motor you will be able to control your boat. A friend of mine has a Minnkota saltwater motor (riptide?) on the transom of his 20' SeaCraft which is a pretty heavy boat. It works great. Due to the design of his boat he had to get creative on the mountimg job, but it's do-able. I believe it's about a 50-60 lb. trust. I have seen the small trim tab motors but I can't tell you how effective they are.

I have been using a Minnkota Riptide 55 lb.-thrust electric motor for 8 years now and it pushes my 18' Parker CC just fine (about 2500 lb. with the motor, gas, me, and gear). It is transom mounted. I had to install a small "stop" (a Starboard scrap with 2 screws) at the top edge of the transom to prevent the motor from vibrating upward and off the transom. It is terrific for getting closer to fish silently. Just remeber to lift it up before you take off with your primary engine.
