What I hate about my job

I'm working here in Downtown Houston and this is how the surf looks just 40 miles down the road....Where did I go wrong?

I could use some help...

I have looked at many places to relocate and Houston seems like the best mix of jobs (high tech) and salt water access...

But, the only two people I know from there don't have alot of possitive things to say about it...

The beach, fishing and jobs seem like a perfect fit for my family and me...

Thanks in advance for your opinion. Ken.

What I Hate About My Job

1. I have to do it 5 consecutive days a week (just too many)
2. Napping is frowned on
3. The funny look I get when I show up at 10:00 smelling like fish
4. The kitchen doesn't have a decent fillet knife
5. Leaves of absence during the summer hasn't caught (pun intended) on yet
6. My boss doesn't have or understand the importance of tide charts
7. There isn't enough wall space in a cube for good fish porn
8. No good spot to clamp a vice on my desk
9. Can't charge clients for RT hours
10. 3 weeks of vacation is 12 weeks to little

Are you coming to Texas?

Ken, I hope this helps you in your decision (and it might be just a tad long, but I did edit it).

One thing about the Houston Area, people either love it or they can't wait to get away from it. A few things: I don't know where you are moving in from, but I have had people tell me that it's more expensive or less expensive than where they came from. It's really spread out, so it can take you a while to get from point to point. If relocating, check out the recent (4-5 years) rains that caused some flooding in areas. I live in the Clear Lake Area and I love it, don't ask me why but I guess I live only 2 blocks from Clear Lake, 5 miles from Trinity Bay and about 40 miles from Galveston. I work downtown, appx 24 miles one way. It's hot in the summer time, can get colder than a well diggers arse in the winter and we won't even discuss the humidity...but we have plenty of it to spare 12 mos. out of the year, and since you didn't ask about the wind, I won't bring that up either. There are some really good places to have a good time or good meal. We have a new football stadium (Super Bowl in Jan.), Baseball stadium (tonights All Star Game) and basketball / convert arena (Toyota Center) in or near downtown. For the most part of the year, something is going on. But you can find most of this in the Chamber of Commerce flyer. On to what you really want to know:

There is a lot of quality fishing (both salt and fresh) and hunting within a hours drive of downtown H. The fishing can, for the most part, be had all year long. Galveston gets crowded, but if you have a boat, a kayak or a friend that has a boat or kayak, this doesn't have to be a problem. The beach is far from white sand quality and has seaweed in the spring but there are fish in them thar waters. From Houston it is a little over an hours drive to Surfside / Freeport. That is where the picture was from. less than 2 hours is Matagorda and East Matagorda Bay & beach. A little over three hours is Port Aransas and / or Corpus Christi. Both great beach spots, both have access to some great inshore and offshore fishing. And if you are in for a road trip, at the end of the coast is Port Mansfield and South Padre Island. Down there, it's almost as good as it gets. Summers are crowded, but in the winter, the trout are large. Nice beaches and if you want, you can cross the border for entertainment.
I hope I haven't confused you and made your decistion any more difficult. I'm not going to BS you, Houston can suck in certain respects and the weather is far from ideal, but in the 18 years I have lived here, I've met some great people and made some really good friends. And when you do get here, check out the Texas Fly Fishers, meets the last Tuesday of the month, TexasKayakFisherman.com and the Totally Texas Message Board aka 2Coolfishing.net. These are some great places to meet new faces and make some new friends. As Hawkeye Pierce put's it "Finest Kind". Give me a call when you get to town. Tight Lines, Chris

I was there just last week and you could not pay me to live there. Maybe I'm just jaded ?? Seriously,Houston has both its good and bad points but for me the bad outweighs the good. I can visit just fine, thank you, but the traffic and the development make it much less amenable than it was even ten years ago but the same could be said of just about anyplace in TX. There is fishing to be had in various venues both salt and fresh and some of it approaches spectacular. All has to do with one's perspective.

Like you said, Jack, it all depends on your perspective. With mine, there happens to be a paycheck attached to it. Give me 7 - 10 more years (7 years before they run me off, or 10 years I'll go on my own) and Houston will be in my rearview mirror. We do agree, there is some good fishing around this area.
