Lake Umbagaog!

Does any one have any experience on the lake?

I imagine it holds some nice smallies but any recommendations would be helpful.

Thank You!

Umbagog is awesome! Contact the NH division of Parks and Rec. for camping info. There are remote sites accessible only by water as well as a drive up camping area. If you camp remotely, I highly recommend getting an air horn and a can of pepper spray for the bears. We had a long night with a bruin that wouldn't leave last summer. I'd chase it into the woods, and it kept coming back. I'm to blame...I had a cooler full of food that was awfully tempting to it. I'd like to take this moment to thank the five rangers who checked me into my site who neglected to mention that bears had been on a rampage last summer, raiding campsites. Apparently it was the worst year any of them could remember. A warning would have been nice. Oh well...it was my fault anyway...I should have been better prepared.
The fishing is spectacular for smallmouth. The lake is full of them, and they are big. If you are bored by soaring eagles, bass that destroy poppers and lazy paddling, you can venture to the mouth of the Rapid River at the northern end of the lake for some fabled brook trout fishing. Both Maine and NH licenses are okay in the lake, but you need a Maine lic. to fish the Rapid.

Here's a great site for info:

Have a blast!

holy sh*t! I had not thought of that place in years. My famlily had a camp there in the late 70's and early 80's. It is a long ride!!!!!

hears the deal: I was more or less just getting started fishing then, and it was a loooong time ago, but i do not remember it being a good bass lake. however, it was a tremondous pickerel fishery. I used to catch huge pickerel there throwing panther martin spinners. I did not use any of the typical smallmouth gear, ie plastic grubs, spinner baits, etc.., and it was summer when i went there, so it may be a better smallmouth fishery than I am remebering, but I do not think so.

Interestingly, I just returned from lake attitash in amesbury after a day of great fishing, and I actually caught a smallmouth about 2 lbs there! I had always heard there were smallies there but never belived it.

also, any of the smaller lakes around the sebego maine area offer great smallie fishing with a shorter travel time..

If you go to Umbagog, let me know how it was, i'd love to hear about it.

Thanks for the info......

Umbagog is worth the drive! Eagles, Osprey, Loon, & great fishing. My five year old son had the fish of the weekend. he caught a 2lb Smally on a worm. As he reeled it in he said " I got a real fighter here, I think it's a shark!"

We almost brought our 17' Maritime skiff but opted for th kayaks and I am glad. The lake is big enough for motor boats(althought it is only about 14' average depth) but is a much better paddling experience to enjoy the surroundings.
