Fly Tying Symposium / Striper Fishing

Good Evening, heading to Somerset New Jersey November 16th for the Symposium from sunny San Jose California. We will have three days to fish for Stripers perferably. What are the best locations, fly shops in this area, hotels and restaurants. Would like to go to Bob Popovics restaurant if it is close? Thanks, Bernard Calip

Here Come Da Judge

Dear Judge,
It all depends where the hot fishing is. Perhaps it'll be close to Somerset at Sandy Hook, The New York Bite, New York Harbor, Jamaica Bay, Atlantic Highlands, and Raritan Bay. Might be super hot farther down the Jersey coast. Can't tell right now. Perhaps Montauk, Shinnecock, or Moriches (out on the South shore of Long Island) will be going strong too. Again, it's too far away to tell right now. Have to see how the Fall developes. It should be happening around Northern NJ and around NYC.
You should be able to get a room pretty easily on short notice because it'll be off season then, so perhaps you can wait to see how things develope.

Bob's restaurant is not TOO far away. It's certainly closer than San Jose. Perhaps an hour and a half (I think) from Somerset.

Perhaps you would like to communicate with Bob himself. He often posts on the web site stripersonline.com I bet he'd answer you.

Are you a tyer at the show? No matter what capacity you attend it will be a great experience and A LOT of fun. I have learned a lot there over the years.

Fly shops to talk to or go see would be Orvis in NY - 44 th and Madison, The Urban Angler, also in NYC (26th and broadway- 3rd. floor), The Fly Hatch, a big, beautiful shop in Shrewsbury, NJ, and perhaps Ramsey Sporting Goods in Paramus, NJ (no, they weren't liquidated by the Sopranos) Someone may suggest other shops. These were off the top of my head.

Do you know John Ryzanych? Of Soft Tex, Fat Head Fame, from Castro Valley?
I'm not sure if he'll be coming also. I spoke with him two days ago too. I didn't ask him.

It's an understatement that nearby New York City has great restaurants. You've got to check out the Big Apple anyway.

Keep checking in here at Reel Time and you'll be able to get good reports. You can e mail me if you want updates (that I know about) too at marksedotti@hotmail.com

Have a good time when you come. Good Luck too.

All My Best,
Mark

Thanks Mark

Mark, Thanks for the information. It is good to hear from you, I met you at the Fly Show in Marin and you are well respected here in the Bay Area as I am sure around the world. My buddy Jim Cramer is giving presentations on Furled Leaders at the Symposium. I have been with the San Jose Flycasters since 1969 and have never fished for Stripers on the East Coast. I am looking forward to the symposium and visiting Fly Shops in the area. I am thinking about spending another week just traveling up and down the coast.
Once again thanks for the information, my best to you and your family, Take Care, Bernard Calip.
