what is the correct way to tie a teaser fly on a plug? 4 to 6' leader enough? looks like that will be the only way i'll be able to get a fly past my feet this weekend. thanks in advance!

Mike,

Put the teaser in front. I would suggest using a swivel. Before you tie the swivel to your main line, take a piece of line and tie an offshore knot--leaving 2 long tag ends. On the long end tie (about 24") your plug (better yet, 6" sluggo on 1.5 oz jighead) shorten the other tag end (about 8") and tie your fly (or 6" white sluggo on 1/2 oz jighead).

Use heavier line than you normally would-- two good size fish pulling against each other can easily break leaders.

I use a teaser even when I fly fish. When I tie on new tippet I usually leave a three inch tag and tie it to that. I don't usually change that fly. I know some guys who use 2 teasers to a main fly. I've had doubles but with 25lb tippet its not a big deal, except when I do it with Albies. Then I usually lose one fly top or bottom and I land the other

Experiment with the locationof the teaser in front of the plug. There have been times when I get much better reslts when the teaser is only a matter of inches in fornt of the plug. The fish seem to compete with each other.

I always fish with a teaser, whether plugging or fly fishing. With the fly rod, two droppers and the trailing fly. Works great!

I am not a fan of catching more than one at a time unless I am fishing for bait!
Doubles take away from the fight, which is bad if you are catching big fish, plus you will likely lose one of the big fish. Catching 2 small ones at a time--what's the point--use a lighter rod and go for them 1 at a time.
My suggestion would be to use a more effective lure for the size of the fish/bait that is around. Now that might be a 4" fin-s fish on a 1/2 or 3/8 jighead.

Teaser in front of a plug or soft bait works great for me. How many times have they not hit your plug but would only hit your teaser? When I cant downsize because of the conditions, big plug and teaser is the only way to go.

More often than not you don't get a double. A teaser lets you figure out which bait imitation is more effective. I usually use a sparsly tied small fly as the teaser and a bigger fly as the dropper. If the teaser is hitting more that the dropper I make both flies small. Because you see one type of bait, that doesn't mean that is what the fish are feeding on.

Depends how you are rigged--When I have done the 2 lures, I get mostly doubles. It depends what your are throwing!

This is a great knot because it ties easily and both ends of the line are essentially tied independently--if one side breaks, the other often holds.

Tie it to your swivel before you tie the swivel on to the main line....

Just found this thread and it answers many of my questions, but I have a one more.
If you are using braid do you tie it directly to the swivel or do you have another length of leader?

It depends how you have your line rigged. In general, I would say just tie the braid to the swivel. Remember to tie the mono to the swivel first, you can't tie the offshore knot with a line tied to the swivel.

You can control tangles by increasing the size of the mono. Heavier line=fewer tangles. (and try not to use a teaser that spins).
