RE: Eastern Long Island Info Request - Late June

Sorry folks...posted previous message without content. I'll be heading out to Montauk (Ditch Plains area to be specific) around the third week of June. Any suggestions on typical fishing patterns and locations would be very much appreciated. (Ocean virsus Sound, bays/estuaries, access, flies, etc...). Thanks very much for any info.

Les I can help you if you are a little more specific as to the type of fishing surf or fly.
In general the area you mention should be very good with bass, blues and weakfish. Most of the weakfishing will be on the bay side.
You will be on the south fork so the north side offers excellent bay fly fishing opportunities. An 8wt rod is perfect.
The sound offers excellent fishing but that is on the north side of the north fork and therefore requires some travel.
The bait will still be small in June so think small, decievers and clousers are a safe bet

RE: Eastern Long Island Info Request - Late June

Thanks for the reply ghost. To be more specific, I'll be primarily fly fishing...most likely with my 9 wgt. Is there good bay access for an angler on foot? I have no aversion to fishing the surf or the calmer waters. However, I would like to focus my attention to the higher percentage locations for that time of year (no boat). I would be targeting whatever is around but hoping for mid/larger sized schoolies with a reasonable shot at a larger fish...including blues. Thanks for the help.

RE: Eastern Long Island Info Request - Late June

May want to try Accobonac inlet (E. Hampton) at Gerard or Laos points. Especially on either side of high tide, the current really flows through there. On the inside of either point are nice deep eddies that tend to hold schoolies and larger fish this time of year (June). There is a fair amount of boat activity during the day, so early morning and evening is your best bet. If it's calm, you can probably hear fish popping bait, especially at night. Dark Clousers fished deep work well. If you can get access to a canoe, the channels between flats inside Accobonac are excellent honey holes, you can often catch fish drift after drift.

Outside Accobonac on the Bay side, the beach is a long flat, and fish cruise here on high tide. There are also plenty of larger fish in the potholes and flats inside Accobonac,m but again, you'll need a canoe or kayak to cross the channel to Tick Island (the name should be a warning regarding appropriate bug protection!);

Another good spot to try: Three-Mile harbor inlet, around the jetty and the beaches on either side (particularly Sammy's Beach). But again, lots of boat traffic.

Should be fun. Feel free to email with any q's.

Also.,,

For a treat, take Capt. Dave Blinken (North Flats Guides) out. Great flyfishing guide with both flats and bay boats so can configure a day to fit the conditions and your interests. Tell him I said "hi" if you go out with him. You can get his info on RT.
