Aransas Pass report

The conditions on Friday were pretty good. a moving tide in the morning, no wind, no rain. The fishing was great the catching needed a little improvement. The brown and roots flat in aransas is awesome if you guys have not fished there yet. Clear water about knee deep with a mixture of hard sand, grass and muddy ground. The fish were very active in the morning. We saw a bunch of blowups and a couple of tails and wakes. I was a about 30 feet from an aggressive red and saw him chase a minnow in a circle in front of me. He nailed my popper but i missed the hook up. I did land a nice speck a few minutes later.
DDS and I managed to fish standing up in the kayaks and drifting. Unfortunately, it was somewhat overcast and we usually spooked the fish by the time they came into view. The best kayaks for this type of fishing seem to be #1 the Drifter, #2 The Prowler. I was also able to Pole DDS around in a tandem Malibu Kayak. It took a little bit of skill and balance not to tip over over but it was manageable.
DDS hooked into nice redfish while a guide was poling his client behind a grass island. I guess they did not see Pham. When they entered the cove DDS was in, he hooked-up to the red and started yelling and doing his victory dance in front of the guide.
I hooked into a good red but did not notice that the Dude at academy tightened my drag all the all down until the fish made his first run. That really sucked.
All in all,it was a good day.
Kayaks cost 50$ at Capt Sally's and another 25$ to have them dropped off at Brown and Roots flat. You can get a Motel room for about 50$ at Balboa Courts on the weekend. So get out there and catch some reds.
