Question Herring runs, Bournedale & Wareham

I visited the Bournedale run twice yesterday, and once already this morning. I est the total number of herring I observed in the 3 visits was approx 50-60.
There were none, as in zero (0), at the mouth waiting to enter the ladders.

This morning we were at the Wareham run at 7am. If you didn't know better, you'd swear Red Sox tickets were on sale! There had to be 75 trucks, and possibly 100 buckets in line. The Wareham herring agents told us this was the WORST run in their memory. In spite of the obvious, they still seem determined to fight on and kill the remaining few.

Sometimes things make no sense....

Then I'm not sure why Wareham is keeping the run open. In the past, they've quickly shut it down when it became obvious that little or no more herring were coming. I looked there a week ago and didn't like what I saw, but was hoping it was just a pause. Maybe that's what the herring wardens are hoping too.

Maybe someone can enlighten me as to the purpose of taking herring that are entering the run to spawn instead of wiating till after they have spawned. Are the wardens checking to see if they are taking females or males? If the females are being taken then that would explain the poor showings at the runs- NO YOUNG! to come back in the future. Maybe the wardens just don't care- who knows. Ron

Thumbs down It's getting absurd...

The Wareham run has been getting pounded the last few years. Average residents cannot even get their fair share any more. The town just keeps selling permits, permits and more permits. And so many guys are stocking up pens these days...

Unlike several years ago when it was more of a "local" thing, now when you're standing in line down there now, you're there with folks from NH, CT, RI, Western Mass...hell, some guys drive in at night and park over night in a camper! The run just cannot go on being the main source for New England. (some from states where their runs were already wiped out). And something is really wrong when you have to get there at 5-am to put a bucket in line in the hope of getting a meager dozen 2 hours later at 7:15. I don't know why they don't just address it by limiting it to county residents, or state residents, or doing a lottery like Middleboro does. But it's so bad now...

And why issue permits with 20 dozen in the first place? Why not just 10? Isn't 120 herring enough for one person!?

Anyway, I think I'm done with the herring thing. I only used 2-3 dozen at most each year, so I was basically paying $10 for 36 herring. But it's just becoming too much of a hassle. Like Bob said, you'd think they were selling opening day Sox tix (against the Yanks!) each morning. Hell, I still have a virgin, 10-punch permit that I have not been able to get even a single dozen out of (and I live only 5 miles from the run).

Anyone want to buy a 2005 Wareham herring permit, with zero miles and looks just like new!?

You and me both, JJ. Neighbors group sent in 4 and got 3, buddy's family sent in 6 and got 3. Dad and I sent in and got shafted. No replies at all. We're Jr & Sr so I called. They think we are one in the same trying to get 2 permits for 1 person. Genius'!

Anyone know of a herring run in, say, Worcester?

i'm just dissapointed i didn't get a permit...first time in over 10 years i won't be taking herring from that run...i knew right away when i first read 2 years ago that they were going to a lottery system that this could happen...last year they had 900+ applicants for 300 permits...this year i'm sure it was worse...

looks like i'll be throwing jigs earlier this year...

JJ....

It's "Family Life" now. Got a little son now, 5 months old. Already has a rod and reel....just not strong enough to hold it yet!

I was never able to get a permit from that run. We'll see next year!?

Exclamation sour grapes?, you betcha...

You can have my Wareham permit! Sold to the highest bidder! Squeaky clean and still reaking with that refreshing new-permit-smell.

But unless you pull a Woodstock and sleep in the dirt at the parking lot over night, it's not worth the paper it's printed on. You'll get just as many herring as you will from being shut out in Middleboro this year!

Remember the days when you could take your kids down to the run on a Saturday (during the day no less, without having to rise before the sun) and get a dozen herring for canning/pickling/ crab bait, etc? Now, when I do have a chance to get down there, I always see the same 10 guys (give or take) lined up there at the front. So if you have a day job and work for a living, forget it. Now the "ordinary citizen" doesn't stand a chance with the panic driven hoarding. When I showed up there last Saturday, I made the mistake of only being 1-hour early and got shut out...silly me.

This sux...

Ok, I'm done venting. Thanks for listening/reading...
