Indian River 01/12/00
Anybody alive out thar ?? I had a decent morning today...although I had to suffer thru temps of high 40's los 50's to do so. Life's a "beach"......!! Anyway, a few trout up to 3lbs +/-, plus one suicidal Redfish..all caught before 8AM. Mostly down around the Harbor Branch area. Nice start to the day.

Ted,

Glad to hear their biting for you! I'll be down in Orlando (from RI) next week for some company training; I'd love to get in some pre-class (i.e. before 9 a.m.) and late afternoon fishing while I'm there (the drive from Orlando doesn't bother me, as I don't plan on doing anything else with my time). Any pointers on shore access, flies, and any other tips to get me a passing chance at catching anything? I'm especially interested in access points; an e-mail response would be fine if you prefer. Thanks!

Ted,
Did a little nite fishing last night off US1 near grant. Caught a few sea trout, 1 ladyfish and a couple catfish on a sluggo. My friend John got some trout and a redfish. All in all it was better than watching tv!

By the way!!!!
Lets keep this Florida board going! It died out on the old reeltime and the only active board was New England. I fish at least once a week and will post after each trip.

Tim......I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to reply to you sooner, but I was out of town on biz & just got back today 1/17/00. If you're still able to access this page, basically just head East 'til you reach the Canaveral/Cocoa BBeach area, & anywere along either the East side or the West side of the River is just fine. Small clousers seem to work pretty good for me. I've even tied up some creations that would defy all similarities to anything on this planet....and they worked. Same old story...right time..right place. Still beats the -31 temps up thar 'though !

ayyup....it sure is better than TV. We're so spoliled 'though...I've been reluctant to get out early due to the 40 deg AM temps. Think it's like that on the rips around Nantucket ? We're prety lucky down here at this time of the year !

Oops, sorry about that blank post!

Anyway, I had some time to fish Monday (17th), and stuck to the obvious spots on rte 1-nuthin'.

Hit the Fly Fisherman Tuesday p.m. (beautiful shop, great people!), picked up a map and some flies for the wildlife preserve, and managed to get out a few more times. It was gorgeous fishing one early morning and a couple of late afternoons, but I got completely shut out. Next time, I need to convince my boss to put an extra day into my trip and get me a guide :)

Oh, and it became painfully obvious my first evening there how the Mosquito Lagoon got it's name; didn't have any bugspray (mosquito's and January just don't go together in my Yankee mind), and I paid for it! Got 100% DEET the next day.

That's some beautiful country you have down there; I look forward to another visit, with many more fish.

RE: By the way!!!!
Dave/Ted, I will be leaving this frozen wasteland in New England for a week in the Ft. Pierce area the third week of February. I'll be bringing light spinning tackle with me. Will be staying on the Indian River. Any advise you could give me on lures, approach, what fish to expect, etc....would be great. Thanks, Dave

RE: By the way!!!!
Dave,
I've only been in the area for about 5 months now, so I need advice as badly as you. The only thing that I can suggest is to fish near the inlet at night. Most people do quite well there for reds and snook on shrimp and finger mullet.
I prefer to use lures and flies and have heard that people do okay with small swimming plugs, DOA shrimp, and sluggo type lures.
If you can't get out there, just try any spot from shore and early mornings and evenings should produce a few seatrout on soft plastics and small jigs. If you can get out at night with a sluggo you should catch trout in any area with a little moving water. You may also see a few reds around. Let me know when you'll be down and maybe we can hook up.

RE: By the way!!!!
Dave, thanks for the info. As an old freshwater fisherman I have a box of sluggos somewhere which I'll bring. I assume 4" sluggos are the right size. What colors do you think work best?
I can't wait to get down there. I'll be on No. Hutchinson Island from 2/22-2/25. Not very long but I'll take any chance to escape the frozen north. Dave.

RE: By the way!!!!
Dave,
Four inch sluggos will work fine. Rig them without a weight using worm hooks.
I've been having the best luck with an orangish brown body with gold sparkles. I'm not convinced that the color really matters too much, especially at night. If you get out at night you may want to try inserting a worm rattle into the bait. I think it would work very well. Hopefully we'll warm up by then! Right now it's in the mid 50's and upper 30's at night. Should be 75 by the weekend.
