Steelhead Rods: XP/GLX Roll Cast/Mend Qualities

I am looking for opinions on the characteristics of the rods below. I asked the below question in the West Coast Forum but thought I should also post here.

I want to buy a #7 & a #8 rod to use specifically for drifting nymphs and wet flies with sink tips and sinking lines on the Tongariro and a couple of other larger rivers in New Zealand, and possibly later on for Steelhead or Light Salmon in the US Northwest & BC. Which rods below, the XP or the Loomis, may likely be better suited to these applications? Can I get some feedback on these specific Loomis Rods from those who have fished them? I've had access to the Sage rods below, but not these Loomis rods. I generally like to fish the Sage XP in freshwater and recently started using the Loomis Crosscurrent GLX for Saltwater, so am generally familiar with the actions of those rods. Would I be correct in guessing the Loomis rods may have slightly more backbone?

Count & Gotcha, where are you...?

Sage 796-4 XP, Length: 9' 6", Line: #7 Wgt, 4 Piece
Sage 8100-4 XP, Length: 10', Line: #8 Wgt, 4 Piece
------------------------ OR ----------------------------------
Loomis GLX FR1147-4, Length: 9' 6", Line: #7, 4 Piece
Loomis GLX FR1208-4, Length: 10', Line: #8, 4 Piece

Hey Gadfly,

I haven't done any steelheading, and so can't comment on the rods you mentioned. But I have heard a lot of positive comments about the new Winston Boron IIx rods in the 11' 7 weight and 10' 8 weight configurations.

I think any of the rods you mentioned would be great rods, though.

Did that Abel Super 11 work out for you, or did you go with the 12?

Tight Lines,
