Can I get some info about fly fishing the rigs, I'm in South Fl and just want to do something different. Anyone recommend guides and best times for YFT?
Thanks

rlbgfish173,

I may be be able to steer you in the right direction, but it would help if you were a little more specific.

Since this is a Texas / Louisiana forum area that overs a huge distance. Where are you planning on going?

What species are you interested in targeting?

There are a bunch of near shore rigs out of Sabine Pass that they hammer large Specs and Reds on all tackle.

For true Offshore fishing you'll want to be leaving from Freeport, Port Aransas, or South Padre Island as your run will be signifiacntly shorter than say out of Galveston.

Anyhow, give me a few more details and I'll put my thinking cap on and see what I can come up with.

Gulf states stretch from Brownsville, Texas to Key West, Florida.

Yo, realbigfish, is it windy over in your direction?

Bones, you are right except that Florida has it's own forum on this site.

A little wind but not much over here on the East side

If you want a shot at YFT, try Capt. Scott Avanzino out of Venice, La. I heard that his anglers landed 4 YFT to 60 lbs. on the fly this past week. And more blackfin tuna than they could count. www.paradise-outfitters.com

Thanks for the geography lesson. Maybe you could also suggest to the administrators to include the other states in the title instead of just Texas and Louisiana. Kind of consfusing this newbie.

rlbgfish173,

I was one of the guys on the trip with Scott last week and it was awesome. We landed 4 Yellows to 60 and at least 70 Blacks in the 24 hrs we were out. We also lost a few other fish that were most likely Yellows. Scott is an excelent Captin and a plessure to fish with. You can see some pictures on our club web site http://www.coastalflyrodders.com/.

Thanks Joe, I'll check that out. What kind of flies and gear were you using?

We were useing 12 & 14's with heavy sinking lines ( Mine were riged by the guys at First Light Anglers). As for flies the best producers were large bait fish patterns( 5 to 6 inches) in light colors that sink fast I also had good luck with a Squid pattern. You also might want to try some glo in the dark matterials.
