I've been unplugged for a couple months.

1. How's the harbor fishing recently? Bass & blues?

2. When should we expect the fall migration to get in gear?

Q1: ON FIRE all over, very early AM is best

Q2: No one really knows But with all this bait around it could be a while, a month or more.

2' Blues are everywhere on top morning and nite...

Went out last nite and didn't have to travel more than 200 yards from the mooring.. 24" bass and numerous blues...

The bait is small 2"...

Last week, everyday I went was awesome...7 to 12lb blues, and decent stripers from 25" to 33"!! I have not gone out this week yet, but will be on the water at 5pm tonight!!! I hope they are still there!!!!

Went out Tuesday afternoon and saw multiple pods in the harbor. Pods were small and the fish were pretty skittish. Positioning up wind and shutting off the motor gave us 5 to 10 minutes of fishing.

Still going this week. If its birds you are after it will take a little more looking aorund, they are more spread out and in smaller flocks. Tons of bait still, and will be for a while, but the fish have been a bit less agressive on the surface around the bait. A few splashes here and there. But, on calmer days if you pay attention to the way the bait moves you will have no trouble finding fish. Birds have not always been giving them away over the past couple days. I would agree, earlier in the AM the better. Most of the better fish the past few days have been under the bait schools and not visable on the surface. Cormorants have been a better sign lately as the fish have not been staying on top like last week despite no boat traffic.

I was surprised at the lack of reports after this weekend.

When I was there, no birds, lots of fish. Mostly legal size. sssh, don't tell anyone.

I agree with this point - waited all weekend and actually went out 3:30 PM labor day - the surface feeding we found had no birds whatsoever. Big bunker schools in the inner harbor completely unmolested by the birds.
The surfacing would only 30-40 seconds and then gone.

Thanks guys ... made it out there today.
Just like you said ... birds all morning long inside.
In fact, it was still going at 2pm when I got off the water.

Today was a mixed bag of success and failure. I arrive at Deer Island rip just before dawn and quickly connected to 2 big blues and a bass. Problem with the last blue at the boat . Line may have twisted the tip. This fish took off and my rod just snapped. I was so bummed & mad at myself. Only 30 mins into the trip.

The only other rod I brought was my freshwater 5wt .. no spinning gear.
I can't cast that rod well and the 5wt line I have will not get down at all.
For some dumb reason I put the larger reel with sinking line on the 5wt rod and tried trolling. Nada ... wasted a couple hours with that.

Finaly, I put back on the 5wt reel with the intermediate line, and the smallest fly I had. I could cast it all of 25ft... with the wind to my back. Line myself up with where I thought the birds where heading and gave it a go. Turns out the fish liked the small fly. Olive & white clouser 1 1/2" long. I managed to boat 4 more blues and 5 schoolies. This was great fun on the 5wt and saved the day for me. For a brief moment, it actually felt like I knew what I was doing flyfishing. Helps when fish are all around the boat.

I think I saw Cannonball at DI rip early am. Shaun was out on patrol in kayak .. working it. Was that Flydeacon out there with a young lady?
Was that Wasabi in the green center console over by Long Island?

My rod is a TFO, hopefully I can use their $25 repair\replacement plan.
Anyway ... good to be out there. Thanks for the reports and pms guys.
Probably be a couple weeks before I can make it back out there.
