Galveston

The fishing in the winter sucks. wait until the summer when the water temp hits 70 degrees and you will find a lot more fish and then hit the surf.

I agree with wittich.

However. I just checked the Trinity bay weather guage at Eagle Point and the water temp = 65degrees, air temp =72degrees, and the wind ~15 mph(was 6mph a few hours ago). Add a coupla beers and your favorite fishin' buddy into the equation and the suck will dissappear on the first tug of the poppa-top or fishin' line. Right?

Click this: http://lighthouse.tamucc.edu/overview/057
Scroll down and click any of the red or blue flags on the coastal map allowing you to access the bay weather stations up and down the Texas coast.

Remember, a suck day of fishin' is a lot better than a great day at work or sitting in front of a TV watching someone beat the crud out of a golf ball!

Hey southtexashvac, where you from? Judging from your handle, you were blown over here by some hurricane. Welcome to Mother Texas.

Cool Goin' Fishin'

Well, I have to tell you, I'm going out tomorrow to the West Bay down by Pirates Cove and will be walking the edge of the Galveston Island State Park area with my new 9 wt setup I finally completed (Tsunami modulus graphite 9 ft 9 wt, Fenwick Sea Class WF9F line, Ningbo Mid-Arbor Billet Aluminum Reel) and am looking forward to it immensely. I have been reading around and the fish are supposed to be sparse, but the high tide is at 11:45 tomorrow so I will be on the water from around 10am until 3pm in hopes they they will move in with the afternoon warmth.

I have been trying to read as much as possible and I found there have been a few people catching specks up in the inlets in shallow water during the afternoon. If I walk for a couple hours or so and don't see anything (which has always been the case for me) I may head across to the surfside and and see what happens out there doing the same type of thing. You never know what you might run into.

Weather looks like a beautiful sunny 70 tomorrow, so the water temp may rise enough to bring in the reds as well as the specks. I don't know, maybe I will still be skunked after tomorrow, but this is the only chance I will have until July. Besides, I've been skunked on the fly for 3 1/2 years, at least I'm not working tomorrow!

Cheers,

Bear

Fishing this month has been pretty unpredictable, so you might have just been havin bad luck. But, I can suggest one thing. Find oyster reefs, these usually hold fish and are the most productive. Specks are standard for them. I suggest using a jig head with a bass assassin or saltwater assassin worked at a moderate pace and bounced off the bottom. What I have found to be very productive for redfish is to get a bass spinner bait, remove the skirt, and attach an assassin or shad imitation onto the jighead. This rig is brutal. Keep trying, and find out where those oyster reefs are and work those during high tides, thats usually when the strongest bite is.

Skunked

Thanks for your replies guys, I am actually from Brownsville TX, where the easy fishing happens, I can say for sure that not once did I get skunked down there in Laguna Madre. I have heard many conflicting remarks about water temperatures, do specks and reds like cold or warm water temperature? Also what really got me last time was that not even the catfish ate our bait. Also should I be fishing the low or high tides or the changes in tide?

I have never been down to Laguna madre, but I really want to go sometime. I just become hesitant driving down by myself to fish somewhere I've never been. I've heard the bonefish move into the flats in July and August, so that is what I would be interested in doing, I just don't know if I'll ever have the chance, though.

Enjoy the easy fishing life in Brownsville!
