Report 5/15 Peconic

Fished the river last night it was a great night. Dead flat calm with a slight chill in the air and no signs of fish or bait. I started with clousers and decievers but did not get a hit or a follow. On a whim I switched to a large yellow popper and all hell broke loose. I had fish on about every third cast. The fish hit the popper harder then I have ever seen, they actually came right out of the water. Most were 20 to 24 inches but I did catch a sickly keeper which I snagged below the mouth. It had a large sore or wound on its side and a hoppkins stuck in it throat. After some surgery i set it free.
I have no idea what these fish were feeding on, they were all concentrated in one area and never showed themselves. I was just lucky enough to stumble upon them.

Sounds like serious fun - nothing like bass hitting poppers aggresively. Never tried it at night - must get some interesting sounds.

PS: Thanks for all your posts. I'm generally only fishing Saturdays, nice to get interim reports on the general area I'm fishing in.

RE: Report 5/15 Peconic

No problem Tuna. I fish 3 or 4 evening a week usually 7 to 10 and mostly right around the river because i keep my boat on the river. On weekends I fish further east around Robins.

I went out again last night to the same spot and nothing. It was colder and more wind. Did not have a hit or see a fish break water. Tried poppers, decievers and Clousers in all colors and all I got was exercise. Go figure!
