Question Softex Alternative

Hi Folks,

I am looking for the name of the (a) non-toxic alternative to Softex. I think there is one available but I can't remember the name of it.

Anyone know?

Thanks

Ray, the stuff I use is called 'Soft Body'. It comes in both a thick and thin formula. I heard that it's no longer available, don't know if that's true or not.

Yup. I've found the 'thick' formula to be difficult to work with. The 'thin' formula is closer to the consistency of Softex.

This stuff has a much shorter shelf life than Softex, I've found that even the 'thin' formula will thicken into an unusable gob in about a year.

don't use softex! It's super toxic and should be avoided.

like mentioned above, softbody by 'angler's choic: is a better, non toxic alternative
http://www.jsflyfishing.com/cgi-bin/item/OF-900126-0000/1000/Angler's-Choice-Soft-Body.html

I have trick I use when using it on mushmouths. Instead of pinching the fly when running the softbody down it's spine, I tie the entire fly, pull the wing up and drop a small bead of softbody down the spine, then I drop the wing into its proper place and pull on all the material from the back so the softbody will run into it without leaving a "pinched" appearance.

Also, use it sparingly. When wet, you won't realize how much you put on until the fly dries. you can always add a little more.

good luck.

The Soft Body is acrylic based, you can thin it with water. I've done that and it works fine.

It's unfortunate that Soft Body is being discontinued. I really like the stuff. It's very durable, stays clear over time (unlike epoxy), and doesn't stink up the house. Is there any similar alternative once this stuff is unavailable?

Go to a hobby shop and check out some of the plastic liquids available.

Capt Superfly mushmouth method

I just tried your trick with the application of the Softbody. When using angelhair for the smaller Mushies I was having just the problem you described..."the pinched look". I tied 3 with your method and they came out MUCH better. Thanks.

Softex Alternative

Golden pigeon this one intrigues me. Have you had restylane or juvederm put into your nose? Did it really achieve a noticeable difference? Is it really a viable alternative to a rhinoplasty?

Hey Ray,

Another product worth trying is called Omni-stick - available at craft stores I get it at AC Moore.

I bought it as a GOOP alternative which it is, but it is far more runny. Similar to "sidewall" Softex. Not nearly as bad on the brain, works great for Whitebait Mushies, and I like to use it with Syn-yak flies by running a bodkin with a drop of it through them.
