8-30: Canal report

Some signs of life on the early east tide pre-dawn. Although I got only schoolies, I had many hits and muffed landing a couple of nicer fish. All on plastics fished deep. Saw some larger bait around, not sure what it was but from the pattern it looked like macks. Well after sunup, there were small bass and blues (mostly 2-3 lb blues) on top east of Sag Bridge, not widespread but concentrated in specific areas. Guys were getting them on topwater plugs much of the morning.

Bill, one of the worst tides I have ever fished this year last night. With the success of the past few days leading up to last night, I figured it would of been a slam dunk. I lost about a dozen sluggos to the blues and only landed one 25'' fish throughout the whole west. Lots of schoolies and blues popping on small bait but I couldn't find a decent fish to save my life. Well, there is always tomorrow. I think I may try one of them beaches to the north tomorrow.

I lucked out. Only one blues cutoff the whole night/morning. Somehow I got into all bass, albeit mostly small, and avoided the toothy critters.

I'm skipping tomorrow to rest up, but will hit either Canal or CCB again Mon AM. Good luck.

P.S. Some good reports starting to filter down from NH seacoast and north shore. 'Bout time.

Thumbs down 9-1: Canal rpt

Not a great kickoff to Sept. One schoolie in three hours on the last of the west tide. A few guys got into schoolies, some small keepers, and some small blues here and there after first light, but all in all it wasn't worth losing sleep over. The east tide at night has been better for me, so I'm waiting until Thurs when we start to get some east night tides again.

I had about 40 minutes of action with small fish at the west end UDL where we last fished with BG. They were hitting when I got there, after drawing blanks farther east. Tons of schoolies breaking in their usual spot, too.

Had one Sluggo undergo a tail-ectomy.

Figures. I flipped a coin on deciding to go there vs. east. They don't mint coins like they used to.

Looks like I'll be waiting until the end of the month to fish the canal again, if that....I only fished 2 weekends this spring there. Isn't it nice of the striper's to disappear for shore fishermen, right in cue with high gas prices!

what is nice is that so many actually base their trips on what they read on the internet...

And the fact that canal fishing has sucked for years now until late Sept.

I'll be lucky to get there a couple times this fall, w/ gas prices like this.
And I have NO desire to enrich Red Top or Sandy's w/ the coming saltwater license, smoking ban, road blocks, mandatory health insurance etc.

No wonder Massachusetts is going broke!

I am actually selling most of my saltwater tackle....I'll be concentrating of fresh water fishing in the coming years, as gas prices go UP & UP!

Saltwater fishing will become a local activity, and eventually go the way of hunting in Massachusetts.

For once I agree with BobG.

And the day can't approach quick enough....I'll get my license, grudgingly throwing more $$ into someone's "General Fund" and enjoy an increase in solitude and a decrease in weekend wacko's.

I'll take a sip of whatever coolaid came along with the license and say "Gee, things sure are better with this license enabling an accurate headcount of anglers".

Yup....greed, and getting as much as you can for yourself, the Massachusetts way

I'm sure were all looking forward to a continued economic slump, and the inevitable tax & fee increases
(all to pay for the few with there underfunded public pension plan)

Eveywhere in Worcester County people are starving for business, and increase there prices to pay the outrageous taxes here....and then get even less business. Fishing tackle took a HUGE jump in price this year.

I take it business in the canal area is booming, and your safe from any adverse increases?

This year has been phenomenal. Not just saying this on a personal level. Most people I fish with and have spoken with, feel the same. While August has shown a decline in consistent bigger fish, May, June, and especially July have been unbelieveable. Lots of big bait around early and stayed thru til august. I can gaurantee the lack of postive reports from the canal have no correlation with the fishing.

June was exceptional for me, but the people that I know didn't do too well in May in the canal.
I haven't even logged on to any forums in July & August....just not going to waist the gas.
I may try again in a few weeks for the last hurrah!

Maybe RI a little next year....I wonder if your going to need a 'license' to fish off a party boat?
