So tue AM The alarm goes off and i get up to go fishing the wife wakes up and is in a good mood so Im a little late getting to the ramp. I launch the boat and find picky but decent fish just about everywhere. I had a hard time getting the fly past all the Macks to get to Stripers underneath and tons of rain bait everywhere. at 11am I put the boat back on the trailer and im heading down beach street out to 236. there is this massive utillity truck coming the other way and you know that street is narrow anyway. I move over to the far right to give this truck enough berth and my right trailer wheel goes off the pavement onto the shoulder. The dirt is super soft and the whole shoulder caves in to this small ditch. Before i can get my foot on the brake pedal the right wheel clips a telephone pole and rips the whole f%&#ing axle about 30 deg backwards and both tires shred against the frame both fenders explode into pieces and the leaf springs come apart all over the road Oh yeah all the lights and wireing are destroyed as well. I was going maybe 22 mph. Thank GOD the boat and my vehicle are unscathed. An hour later Im watching my most prized possesion winched onto a flatbed tow truck My near perfect June morning is flushing down the toilet and a cop is telling me to clean up the debris and contact the owner of the mailbox I destroyed. Luckily Im heavily insured and the whole trailer is going to be rebuilt only thing left orig will be the frame and the bunks.
I learned a couple of things this week
check your insurance and update
I will always use my transom straps
I have been dragging a trailer around for so long Ive gotten a little complacent about safety

should have stayed in bed with your "good mood" wife....mine NEVER reacts that way when the alarm goes off at o'dark thirty to go fishing.

Glad to hear no one was hurt, and that's a good deed you've done, telling of your misfortune as a heads-up fodder for others. I'll give my wee ones a check. Thanks.

Yikes! Glad it all turned out ok in the end. Could have been a lot worse I s'pose!

holy crap, thats not cool. glad to hear it wasnt worse.

I have to admit i laughed pretty hard at the whole cop/mailbox thing. Im sure thats the least of your worries.

It was pretty comical as soon as it happened I was running my hand over the boat checking the Gel Coat then I checked the engine then the chines, fly rods etc. My priorities are so warped. I did use General towing out of Rochester they were awesome Ill post there # and Brian's Trailer repair He was the Head marine mechanic at the Kittery Bybass Atlantic boat and Trailer Before Port Harbor Marine bought them out. He has his own shop and all he does is Trailer repair now Hes right in Berwick so I can keep an eye on things.

But seriously the transom straps are the reason My boat isnt in the front yard of the house. I never use them I dont know why I put them on That AM???
