Montauk Sportfishing Report 5/1/17

OK boys and girls, get your heads out of your cellphones and look up. There is a light at the end of the tunnel and it ainít a train. Itís the beginning of the fishing season. So get out your Cabelaís catalog and order the last little bit of crap that you just have to have.
Porgie season opens today but you will have to head over to Peconic Bay to get any of those. Striped bass season is already open and boats back west out of Fire Island are catching them now, and some schoolies have already been taken off the beach at Bridgehampton. I expect that any day now one of the local sharpies will catch some here. Over the last couple of years, the boats havenít started to catch any until around the end of May, but there are more small fish around now than there have been over the last couple of years, so they may start up a little sooner than that. Fluke season starts May 17 and they usually start biting right away.
As usual there are changes in the fluke regs, with a 19Ē minimum size limit, up an inch and a three fish bag limit, down from five. It looks like the seabass and porgie regs are the same as last year.
A couple of bright bulbs had the great idea to go for a scenic tour off the light in a small plastic boat with a small outboard motor that couldnít overcome the outgoing current. Luckily Capt Michael Potts on the BLUEFIN IV was coming home from a cod trip and towed them back inshore a bit where the Coast Guard picked them up.
