Sable Island/Flemish Cap and Stellwagon

I am purchasing a Boston Wailer tomorrow (a 30 footer) and was planning a sail-fishing trip at some point in the next two weeks. I am definately going out to Stellwagon this weekend, just to play around.

The following week, however, me and a few of my friends were planning on making the trip to Sable Island and over to the Flemish Cap. I heard the fishing can be great out there, but, as a novice navigator, i am not familiar with that territory. Has anyone ever been out there, and what type of navigational equipment will i need, if any, other than the basics?

i'd wait for hurricane debby to move further up the coast and make sure you have enough beer for the long trip back, just remember the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. good luck.

Sail-fish found at the Flemish Cap

"News Flash" One lone 30 foot Boston whaler located a feeding school of "sail-fish" at the infamous Flemish Cap this past weekend....No fish were taken however as the crew were all a bunch of hobos and didn't know how to set a hook, let alone catch a fish. Find another board to waste our time with. Although ragging on you makes for a nice diversion from the stock market.....

What Dude ! Lets see, Sable Island is like how far from New England, 600 miles. Hope your 30 footer holds 4000 gallons of fuel and you have room for some fuel drums on the deck ! Lets see you will also need to bring some maps, some food, a good flare gun, a really really good radio, and what else, oh you may want to bring a 100 foot fishing vessel with you too, maybe tow in on the back of your "30" footer.

You may want to bring a helicopter too !

Looks like not many people have a sense of humor on this board. If you aren't going to tell them where to catch a fish or how to catch a fish they don't want you to waste their valuable time.
I think you should be fine in that Whaler out there. I was out there last week in my kayak. No problem. Fish everywhere.

poats4000,
Don't let them discourage you, they're all jaelous because you have a new whaler 30' and they don't.

I don't think you need anything but the basics: a compass, some charts (get the waterproof kind in case they get wet). Also, if you can afford it and have some time to learn how to use it a sextant may come in handy.

Go have a good time and tell us how it goes.

C'mon guys, give the guy some help here. I just returned from Costa Rica (I left on Monday) in my 16' Whaler. I followed the sun by day, and stars by night. Pounded the Tarpon (up to 180 lbs.) on 8wt. Those Whalers, you can't beat um! Next week It'll be the inland passage to the Great Lakes for Salmon. Any serious fishermen interested? (You get the night watch!)

RE: Sable Island/Flemish Cap and Stellwagon

Ya good fishing out on the flemish cap. 3 of my buddies and myself took my 16 foot skiff out of Gloucester last November out to the cap. My boat handled the 15 foot waves with ease and we caught about 5 swords and packed them in ice in the live well. Good thing we brought that extra 5 gallon can of gas and I took that internet course, "Learn to Navigate to Iceland and back in 30 mintues online or your money back" or I dont think we would have made it !

We also ran into a 200 foot longliner out of Japan there that needed a tow back to port for repairs so we strapper her to the back of my boat and brough her in. Those guys had some mean saki !

If you did buy a Whaler I would guess you would know how to spell it. Thanks for the laughs though, my office mates are wondering why I'm cracking up when read all the replies.
