Recent genetic studies on maine atlantic salmon have revealed a mixing of genes with european salmon. The aquaculture industry uses a european strain of salmon in their pens. The fish and wildlife folks fear salmon escaping from aquaculture pens are fouling up the wild salmons gene pool. What happens when these fish cross breed?Apparently the salmon loses much of its ability to return home kind of like waving a magnet over a compass. The two have been seperate for thousands of years one migrating east the other west. Both the state of Maine and the aquaculture industry refuse to recognize the problem never mind address it.Due to this lack of response the fish and wildlife service is considering an emergency listing as a threatened species.
