Flyrod and reel selection. Need Help

I can't take it anymore. All this talk about fly fishing, I have to try it. My only problem is that I know very little about selecting equipment. Oh I have the catalogs, but the more I read, the more confused I become. Some talk about 33 and 44 million modulus graphite, and others say nothing, what's the difference?. I've looked at Orvis, Sage, Cabella's, Conservationist, and many others. How do you select a good quality rod and reel combination.

I want a so called dual purpose set up. I want to use it for heavy freshwater fishing on the rivers in the wilds of Maine occasionally, but I also want to use it primarily in saltwater for striped bass. I am not specifically looking for a heavy salt water set up for catching exclusively keeper bass, mostly schoolies, and a few keepers.

My confusion arises from trying to determine what quality blank you get for the money without purchasing just a brand name.

Could somone please reccommend a rod and reel combo that is of good quality that will fit my needs in the $350.00 range. I'm willing to spend a little more, but is it necessary for trying it for the first time?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Mark M.
