As a beginner I've been very happy with my Redington RedStart, and I've heard more experienced people praise it. Package with rod, reel, backing, and line was $200, and they've upgraded reel to a better drag. Ditto what Jim says about line; the stuff with the package ain't gonna be that good. I've been happy with Teeny 350, although I've seen some complaints about it. Ask to try it. American Angling in Salem, N.H. insisted that I try it before buying.
