Re: Striper Short Killed in Hit Movie Office Space

It was originally thought that striped bass X white bass hybrids would be sterile. In fact, they are fertile and can be crossed with one another or back crossed to either parental species. The original F1 hybrids grow the fastest, so commercial hatcheries do not usually breed the hybrids. Anyway, they were once stocked in resevoirs and other places (like Chesapeake Bay) with the thought that their numbers could be regulated by stocking. That is, if they got out of hand the population could be eliminated within a few years simply be stopping stocking them. This was, in retrospect, a serious mistake. Fortunately, few resevoirs have suitable conditions for hybrid stripers to reproduce. I know that they have successfully reproduced in parts of the Mississippi River and, to a very limited extent, Chesapeake Bay. I would be surpirsed, but not shocked, if they are reproducing in New Jersey resevoirs.

Regards,

Eric
