Back in the UK where I',m from orginally, dwindling salmon stocks resulted from a number of factors - the biggest being the discovery of the summer feeding grounds of the Faroe Islands by commercial fleets. That combined with estuary overfishing and loss of spawning habitat did a pretty effective job of knocking out what were once great Salmon fisheries all arround the UK mainland. One of the most prolific salmon fisheries I ever experienced was the River Moy in Co. Mayo, Eire. The springtime runs were phenomenal and resulted largely from a vast network of clean spawning streems in the rivers headwaters. From an environmental recovery point of view, thats where I would begin.
