Doug-

I don't know if the clear lines really work better, but they sure
sold this angler (if only the fish were as gullible). Several companies
make a clear line. You make wish to consider a normal weight forward (also
called rocket taper). The salt water tapers are pretty aggressive and seem
to have an abrupt turnover. For me, I find the the salt water taper to be a
little easier to use in quick casts or wind, but harder to use in distance...
I like the regular weight forward taper better... for me...

As for leaders, nothing fancy for salt or trout. Medium length and stout...
With dry flies or nymphs you often worry about drift and leaders play an
important role. For streamers, you and/or a current are imparting movement
on the fly... you aren't looking for that "drag free drift"...
