Well, I got rid of the old Johnson 30 (may it burn in hell and be used as a blender for cesspool cocktails) and will soon be the proud owner of a new Honda 4-stroke 40 hp.
That means I can chase bonito at will.
So, last weekend I tried up a dozen bonito bunnies based on R-T contributing editor Page Roger's pattern, tied six flourocarbon 10-foot leaders (20#-16#-12#-8#), changed my lines over to an eight weight Monic floater and an 8 wt. Orvis Sly line intermediate, washed out the stripping basket and am generally all fired up with no where to go.
Figuring the fish will show up any day now, I had a question about stripping technique.
In the last installment of the board, one writer observed that a slow-or-no retrieve worked well on false albacore. Those who chase tiny tuna with a spinning rod and Deadly Dicks are taught to retrieve as fast as they can. It seems to me that a fly sitting in the path of a charging school has a better chance of getting whacked than a piece of heavy tin being speed-retrieved.
Any thoughts?
