Merrill, As far as the fish catching from the shore...Location,presentation, patience.
Honestly, during the outflow there is a serious and continuous rip generated at the
point. You probably could get close enough with a boat to do it but you'd need a serious
ancher in that the water movement would have you in and out in minutes. You'd also have
to contend with AH's who can't read the water and have to cast 100 yard with a 6oz sinker.
Mind you, I do most of my stuff there with bait, but to be effective you don't need to go
far out and 2oz is tops. Just enough for bounce. I also use a slide.
As to the sick fish. Yes, I remember your post re sores (and the P word). I won't spell it
out for fear of being accused of chicken little. The sores themselves did not appear to have
been caused by rubbing, however, the overall appearance of the fish, it's raggednes, worn down
fins suggested the similiarity to pen raised trout. Even the snout appeared to be abraised. As
to the sores, they were located in close proxcimity (sp) to the fins. they were open. reminded me
of what a lamprey does to a lake trout. Haveing sea lice also indicates that it was not in the
river/bay very long - or am I mistaken here. This was also the dullest and slimiest fish I've
caught in my career. Since you are on/in a boat and have those great fish/work hours :-) I would
probably recommend the lab at Adams Point for several reasons:
1. They have a fish dock first and formost. You could THEORETICALLY catch a sick fish right in
front of the lab and bring it to their attention without breaking any laws, per se.
2. Fish Biologist in attendance - more interested in the well being of the stock as opposed to
law enforcement.
3. See #1 above quicker. Less chance of the fish dying. If you really want F@G involved you could
call them on your cell phone - or have the lab do it.
4.Downside: posession of a short is illegal. I don't know whether they have a biologist trained in
the study of bass. Might be worth a call to find out. I do know that it is very difficult for a shore
fisherman to do anything about this save take a picture and submit a report. This is better left to
you boaters.
Good luck. I'll be on the point wednesday after 6:30. I'll be wearing one of those Orvis - "The River
Runs Through It" - fishing hats. Hey I did not buy it. It's a Xmas gift from my brother who doesn't
fish who thought it was cool. Actually it's quite hot but it keeps the sun out of my eyes and when I
bug spray it it keeps the littl sh$ts out of my eyes. Fish On, Paul H.
