More about Ficht Oil Weeping - 11/23

I talked to an Evinrude technician today about this oil weeping problem I am having on my 175 Ficht outboard. The tech said that it was likely one of two problems:

1. The oil lines and fittings are not quite connected properly.

2. The oil is leaking through the reeds back into the throttle bodies. Any oil weeping beyond that point is supposed to leak into the air silencer. The residual oil in the silencer is not a problem and the silencer should be cleaned about once a year.

It is likely that the silencer is not seated properly thus promoting the leakage into the engine cover. The air silencer is held in place by 4 or 6 rubber bungies. If necessary, he recommends tightening the silencer by tying a knot in the bungies. Oth

erwise, he suggests simpler realignment will suffice. He also said that all 2 cycles experience similar oil movement, particularly when not stored in a vertical position. (Anyone have any comments on this?) He also hinted that the tech staff has noted

to the engineers that this leakage from the silencer is a design issue but that it is not likely to be changed. He said this design has been in place for 3 years. He claims that most of the problems I describe can be fixed with some relatively simple de

aler attention.

So...I am going to store my motor in a vertical position from now on whenever feasible. I am also going to have another dealer look into this in the spring. It continues to smell of a design flaw and I will press it after I and another dealer take a loo

k at it more thoroughly. I am also going to call me seller dealer and have a talk about all this. Unfortunately, its a 4 hour drive up to his place to have him look at it. (There are definitely disadvantages to not buying locally.)

Let me know if any of you hear anything about this.

Chick
