Mark: Micron is basically gelspun spectra. It's almost all made by one manuafacturer (Hint: loctated in Pottstown , PA) regardless of name brand, and it is significantly thinner than dacron of comparable breaking strength. ie. 45lb.= 12lb. dacron diameter

. So, if reducing the amount of backing you have on your reel is what you're trying to do, it won't happen with gelspun/spectra/micron. In fact, you'll have to pack three times as much on your reel just to fill it up to the proper level (that's the suppos

ed advantage of the stuff: increased capacity). If you want to reduce the amount of backing you have on the reel, go to a thicker diameter dacron. It's not a good idea to have a half-empty spool on your reel, since your retrieval ratio will increase with

more backing (larger diameter) on the spool, and you'll get quicker pick-up. My reels all have 30-45 lb. Gudebrod SST on them. Anywhere from 200yds. on 6-8 weight reels to 650 yds. on the big boys. (12-14 wts)
