I have never caught a salmon ice fishing but I have had rainbow trout jump right as I guide his head into the hole, more than once. I actually encourage it as I generally use 2lb test leaders which means it can take several tries to get a decent fish past that crucial last couple of feet. It's mighty nice to have your fish pop out of the hole and land on the ice a couple feet away.
