Lead wire for flies

I'm having fun experimenting with *big* 7 or 8" flies tied on 3/0 hooks. LOts of feather; lots of bucktail, wide and deep profile.

Water testing them in the tub the darned things float from all the buoyancy in the hairs.

I've also started experimenting with lead wire on the same type flies. Is there a formula for how many wraps of lead wire you should use to get a buoyant fly to sink slowly; fast?

L.
