12/04 Pete, I guess there is a lot of fine units out there, here is my two cents worth. I lve in RI and go hunting and fishing, so I want a unit that is small and portable, so 3 years ago I bought a Garmin 12XL and it works fine. Going in the woods I find that after 3 years I can still get back to the same trails and ledges that I want to. I did buy a Topo program from Earthvisions of NH. for RI. I can click the mouse on to the area of the topo that I like the looks of, just look at the latitude and logitude, put it into the 12XL as a waypoint and go there. I don't leave it on as when you turn it on it only takes about 30 seconds to get a fix on your position. There is a newsgroup that is all about GPS I have forgotten the name though. Art B.
