Have you tried stopping the plug just as it hits or, even better, just before it hits the water? I found that it allowed me to gain control immediately and start my retrieve with both conventional and spinning gear. I use a similar idea now with the fly (following Lefty Kreh's advice to use my line hand to circle the line and stop it just before the fly lands.)
