Here's a question for all you tech guys out there.
Supposing an 11wt. Rod and a 60ft of line in the air and Cortland 444 XRL (int)
shooting taper line with the small running line. Which is sized in std. wt.s rather
than gr. like alot of the sinkers. granted it's just another way of saying the
same thing but....I have these questions
If a line wt. is determined by the first 30ft or so, once you have the head
out of the guides, with the thinner running line, the actual wt of the
shooting taper would be less than that of a comparable full line YES?
My reasoning is that while the first 30ft. weighs the same, the rest of it is much
lighter. So I guess what I am getting at is that overlining the rod
in this case might be the preffered way to to business. Say putting a 12 wt.
on an 11wt. rod pour example
Two caveats
1. N/A to depth charge and other super sinkers
1b. Not that this matters anyway, I was just mulling it over the other day
and was curious what you guys would think.
2. Never used a shooting head and from what I understand you just false cast
the head out and let the rest fly (so to speak) so the rod would never be loaded
with that anyway yes?
But wait there's more !
And another shooting head question, if a sinker is rated at 400gr. say an Orvis
depth charge, is the weght measurement consistent with full lines at 30ft or is it
for the whole head ? And if it is consistent, when we speak of putting a teeny 350
on an 8wt. aren't we in fact lining it with the equiv wt. of an 11wt. more or
less? something that would seem to generate a great deal of controversy when
done with a full length line.
And finally a BMW question, should I wash the leather with Lexol or Amourall Leather or
Gink?

I first heard about shooting tapers, I thought we were talking about hunting
