actually, in the bournedale run, the bluebacks are the last herring species to spawn each spring. it is because of their traditional late arrival, combined with the beginning of the annual "canal derby" that town officials are concerned with the viability of the blueback herring in the bournedale run. it appears that the brunt of herring harvested during the derby period just happen to be bluebacks. this is because they return to spawn later in the season at precisely the same time fishing pressure increases due to the derby. this info didn't come from me, but was supplied by Mr. Ken Rebeck, the state herring biologist. the alewive population is ok, but the blueback is in jeopardy. it appears either the derby, or the harvest may have to be adjusted so that the species is not further compromised.
