Jeff, keep it simple. Lately I have been using a nine foot piece of twenty pound fluorocarbon. When I get a bass near the kayak I can grab the leader and release the fish very quickly. I think it is important to land and unhook fish as quickly as possible; the relatively heavy leader makes this possible. At night I drop down to seven feet. In real shallow water in bright sunlight (if I see fish and can't get a hit) I will use five feet of thirty pound, three of twenty and a two foot twelve pound tippet. I add a drop of zap-a-gap to the blood knots. One word of caution - there is a wide range of tensile strength in tippet material of the same line class. You may be accustomed to the tensile, elongation and modulus of one brand and be surprised when you switch brands. I work for a monofilament manufacturer and have had the opportunity to test different brands - if you find one you like, stick with it.
