Larry,
I never had the line under the drag knob problem until after I had cleaned the reel in mid-season. I found the metal drag washer was slightly warped....I turned the washer over...the problem went away. It was not sitting quite flush enough to sit all the way on the shaft. The knob did not get to fully seat.

Cleaned the 4400 this evening. When I opened it up, I was surprised. Unlike the other troublesome reels...the Penn's main gear was not made out of cheap "white metal". It was either aluminum or brushed stainless. No corrosion. Cleaned and greased..almost as good as new. I think I'll keep it for a little while longer.Thanks for the info.
