Lots of gray area/unknowns. Risk/Benefit is key. If you spend time outdoors, you're at risk. Yes, kids can get it and are ineligible for vaccination under about 15 years old, I think they decided. My 11 year old had it, with classic rash and one month of amoxicillin by mouth. Suffered only with the bad taste. My wife had it twice, with obvious rash. Cleaned up without symptoms by tetracycline. It seems to affect people variously. Some get chronically ill; some have neuro damage; fatigue; depression... some, perhaps many, have depression and fatigue as a function of inability to cope with their lives and wind up treated for Lyme. Personally, I've had at least fifty deer tick and nymphal ticks embedded over the last 15 years and never had the disease as far as I can tell. Studies in my area found 50% of the ticks carrying the bug. Some MD's say the disease doesn't exist; others dose all tick-bitten patients with antibiotics. Who knows?
